Crusader Quiz
Every week, I interview one fellow Crusader in the 2nd Writers’ Platform-Building Crusade. The questions are the same, but the answers will help us learn more about our fellow bloggers!
Today, my willing victim is Susan Fields. In her own words, Susan is a “wife, mother, writer, avid coffee drinker, and insomniac”. Oh, and she has the most cheerful coffee mug I’ve ever seen! How can your day not be brightened by this?
Anyway…on with the interview!
When did you start writing?
I wrote my first book for a school assignment in second grade. I’ve written off and on since then, but I’ve only been serious about publication for the past few years.
What genres do you write?
I love fantasy, and I’ve recently discovered a love of romance as well. My current wip is a romance involving time travel. Basically, if it can’t happen in real life, I’m interested.
Sum up your current WiP in 10 words or less.
Tabitha falls for the man she’s trying to kill.
What’s your ultimate goal as a writer?
Probably the thing that bothers me most about being a writer is that I can (and have!) devote years to a project with absolutely no assurance it will ever be read by anyone other than my wonderful family, friends, and crit partners. My ultimate goal would be to have a large and successful enough body of work that I could have a reasonable expectation of my next project being published, so I wouldn’t have the nagging thought that I’m just wasting my time.
How close are you to achieving this goal?
Since I’m still unpublished, that goal is a long, long way off. I am, however, very close to querying my wip. That’s the first step, anyway.
Any quirky writing habits?
I’m an early riser. Sometimes, way early. If I’m working on something and excited about it, I can get up at 2am pretty regularly. It definitely comes and goes, and right now I’m more likely to get up about 4-5am. But I’m a stay-at-home mom and I rarely go a day without my two-hour nap!
Best writing snack?
Coffee definitely puts me in the mood to write. When the coffee’s gone, I’m usually done with my morning writing session. Other than that, chocolate.

Butt-kicking bookworm. Displaced Malaysian. Writes crime & thrillers. Debut novel ORACLE will be released by J. Taylor Publishing on 30th July 2012.

Thanks for interviewing me, J.C.!
That coffee mug was given to me by a group of students I managed a Destination Imagination team for, and it does make me feel cheerful!
Good morning, just popping over from Susan's blog.
Yay for Susan Fields! She's fabulous!! Thanks for the interview JC Martin! I love Susan's summing up of her current wip!! Now that truly is a writerly skill!!! Take care
x
Wow! You are up early!! But I bet it's nice to write in the quiet and uninterrupted.
Susan is so cool and I can't wait until she reaches that goal!!!
Loved hearing about your writing routine!
You go, baby! Great interview!
There's nothing like chocolate, coffee, and a cool mug! Nice to meet you Susan!
I wish I could get a 2 hour nap
But I sleep in the morning and then write during the nap time. It all works out! It was fun getting to know a little more about Susan. Thanks!
Great interview! Know how you feel about the time-wasting thing.
How could anyone not adore Susan?! She's amazing and I can attest the Tabitha-time-travel-romance book is great. Susan is definitely not wasting her time, she's going to make it… (though I can relate to the defeating feeling, it just takes sooo long).

Thanks for sharing, ladies! (And I can't believe I haven't been following you yet, J. C. Your blog is awesome.)
2 am? Wow. I'll stay up until 2 am but then I'll go to sleep, not the other way around!
Great interview. Susan is a gem!
Great interview. I have that same nagging thought about my own work lol. I don't think it ever goes away.
Great interview, ladies. Susan, I hear you on the coffee!
I know that Susan isn't wasting her time! I've read all three of her novels and loved all of them. (I didn't read the one she wrote in second grade.) It's just a matter of finding the right person to query, Susan. You will be signing books for me in the not too distant future.
I agree–it's tough to write something without knowing that it will ever going anywhere. I think that's why it's important to write things you love. Because at least you have that satisfaction.
Super interview! Susan is such a sweetheart.
Howdy to both of you.
Susan, even when you're published, you will get those nagging doubts that anyone will want to read the new stuff you're writing.
Two am is waaaaaay early to be up writing! Whatever works, though!
Thanks for stopping by, and for all your kind comments, everyone!
Thanks for sharing these interviews with us. I still have your questions, and I'm going to send in the answers soon!
I'm starting up a 'Critiquing Crusaders' program, where participants in the Second Crusade can find other writers to exchange critiques with or form critiquing circles. If you're interested, come by The Kelworth Files to check it out!
Two am? Goodness, I thought getting up at 5 am to write was early. Love time travel and romance – can't wait to see bits and pieces!
If I had a nickel for every time I fell in love with the person I was trying to kill! That's a great premise.
I need a fantasy element too. And I know what you mean about not wanting to feel like I'm wasting my time. Let's hope we all get there!
I like Susan's one-sentence description of her wip.
I hope she achieves her goals.
wow! cool interview of a really cool writer. miss susan rocks for sure! for that early morning stuff all i gotta say is ack! ha ha
…smiles from lenny
I loved the way you summed up your WIP. Not many people can do that in a small amount of words. Great interview
Great interview! Love Susan! And that wip sounds very interesting! I'm sure it's just a matter of time! No wasted time there!
You guys are so cool – I love you all! Thanks for stopping by and reading my interview!
No surprise that you have so many supporters Susan–you're awesome! Really enjoyed interviewing you, and enjoyed being interviewed by you in return too!
