Writer Wednesday Interview with James Hutchings + Book Giveaway!

Welcome to my Writer Wednesday feature! Each week, I either showcase a fellow writer who has inspired/encouraged me in some way, or I interview one. Writers could be at any stage of their writing career.

I am pleased to introduce this week’s guest:

James Hutchings

James is the author if the collection of short stories and poems entitled The New Death and others: 44 stories. 19 poems. No sparkly vampires.

***Find out how you could win an e-book copy of James’s book below!***

When did you start writing?

I did a Bachelor of Arts majoring in creative writing and media, but I didn’t do anything with it after graduating. Years later I created a fantasy city called Teleleli or Telelee as a background for role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. Once I finished I realised there wasn’t any demand for it. My ex suggested I write stories instead, and that’s how I got started. Along the way I realised that my poems were better received, so I’m concentrating on them now.

What genres do you write?

I mostly write fantasy, although The New Death and others has some general fiction in it as well. However I’m branching out a bit with Confession of a Bounty Hunter, which I’m currently working on.

Sum up your current WiP in 10 words or less.

A long poem set in the old West.

What’s your ultimate goal as a writer?

To live off my writing.

How close are you to achieving this goal?

About 100% off.

Any quirky writing habits?

Not really. I’ve heard some writers say they can only write in a particular room, or only on an old typewriter or something, but I’ve never had anything like that. I do a lot of writing on bus or train trips.

Best writing snack?

My favourite snack is lemon-flavoured soy yoghurt. I’ve never met anyone else who liked it. There must be some out there because they keep selling it, but everyone who’s tried it has hated it.

Kung Fu KAPOW!  Question:

You are forced to give up either reading or writing for the rest of your life. Which would you choose?

Probably writing, because I could find other creative outlets.

Giveaway!

James is excited to give away three e-book copies of The New Death and others, one each to three lucky readers!

Blurb:

Death gets a roommate…

An electronic Pope faces a difficult theological question…

A wicked vizier makes a terrible bargain…

44 stories. 19 poems. No sparkly vampires. There’s a thin line between genius and insanity, and James Hutchings has just crossed it–but from which direction?

I tried to post your count down widget on my blog side bar and all it displays is the clock, not the cover of the book (which again, is awesome). Am I doing something wrong? I’d like to help.

No, you’re not doing anything wrong. Blame me for being a cheapskate and refusing to pay for Widgetbox. :P You’ll have to grab the image of the cover separately. I’m touched you’d like to help–thank you! :)

  2. Nice! I’m interested in reading James’s book to see which way he is crossing that line. Thanks J.C.!

I actually really liked reading the Teleleli stuff, even though I was never sure how to say the name. I have a soft spot for puns. But fiction is awesome. Rock on!

  7. I have the same ultimate writing goal! (Most of us writers probably do!)
